Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has put forward initiatives on goals of sustainable development, establishment of regional green economy centres and measures against sea-level rise during the three-day United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO+20) in Brazil.
The event starting on Wednesday, with the participation of over 100,000 delegates, is focusing on two themes including a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
At the conference, Nhan suggested that the United Nations should work out a list of goals on sustainable development toward the year of 2020 and set up a supervision and assessment mechanism of these goals.
He said these should be universalised application to all countries. However, it is necessary for each country to use its unique conditions to find out a suitable method to access the goals.
He said the regional centres of green economy should be set up to take responsibility for tracking down key indices of a countries' green economy, providing regular consultancy to countries on policies and practical measures related to a green economy and assisting the UN to prepare progress reports every six months.
Nhan also said Viet Nam called for the UN to form a network with the participation of all country members to cope with the sea-level rise and build an effective global program to tackle this issue.
He said the country is ready to become an active member of this network.
He affirmed Viet Nam considers sustainable development a long-term target in its development strategy.
On the sideline, Nhan had bilateral meetings with Guinean President Alpha Conde, German Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel, Dutch Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen and World Bank Managing Director Mahmoud Mohieldin.
