Japan has emerged as the top importer of Vietnamese cuttlefish and octopus with the export growth of 50-150% per month, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

VASEP, however, said local producers are facing an input shortage as the supply only meets 20-30% of the processing capacity. Vietnam has to import materials from Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia.
Besides, Vietnam has to compete with China, Morocco and Spain in Japanese market where the country only accounts for 3% of Japan’s cuttlefish and octopus import.
In the first six months of 2012, Japan imported 1,137,563 tons of Vietnamese seafood worth ¥703,671 million, up 7.1% in terms of quantity and 13.9% in terms of value against the same period last year.
