According to estimates, climate change has caused a 2% loss in GDP because of property damage, and the threat of much higher losses looms as the earth warms. 

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment announced their estimates on April 19, at the 6th International conference on community-based adaptation to climate change (CBA - 6), in Hanoi.

Margareta Wahlstrom, United Nation Special Representative of Secretary-General, said that natural disaster management is a challenge to any countries. That's why each countries have to adapt to the change in order to prevent human loss and reduce damages.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Cao Duc Phat, said Vietnam faces a large number of natural disasters each year, including floods, large storms and landslides, causing a great deal of damage to agriculture and the development of other sectors of the economy.

MARD is cooperating with other agencies to create a plan that would bolster the nation's dike systems, protect harbours and preserve forestlands.

Conference participants took trip to areas that have most affected by climate change, such as Binh Dinh, Quang Nam, and the Mekong Delta.

At the conference, Wahlstrom also proposed a project to help millions of poor people who will be affected by the climate change. CBA's main goal is to ensure the funding will reach the most disadvantaged.
