The HCM City National University has announced the halting of enrolling students for the talented engineers and bachelors, though the program has just gone a half way (2002-2020). This shows the perplexity of educators and agencies in training and using talents.

Talents also cannot find jobs

Only one of the 35 students, who graduated from the first training course applied for talented students, has become the lecturer of the school. Two of the graduates from the second training courses also worked as lecturers of the school. However, one of the two later gave up the job.

Ngo Tra My, a lecturer of the literary and linguistics faculty of the school said that the majority of the graduates from the training program for talents have been taking the jobs which do not have any relations to the trained majors, and it is really a big waste of resources.

Most of the students graduating from the English Philology Faculty of the School, do not work as English literary teachers or researchers as per the initial training goal, but work for foreign companies.

PM, who was a student of the training course for talents, said that the knowledge she received at school, mostly in language skills, nearly do not help her in the job. A student of normal classes also can fulfill the duties.

At the University for Natural Sciences, physics majoring talented students complain that they find it very difficult to obtain jobs. Most of the students can only find jobs if they have degrees in other majors.

According to the Mathematics-Informatics Faculty of the University for Natural Resources, 6/18 students of the first training course, 7/15 of the second, 6/9 of the third and 17/19 students of the fourth course have left for overseas study. No student from the classes for talents is working at research institutes to help develop the basic science in Vietnam.

Big money spent, modest achievements gained

According to the leaders of the schools which join the program of training talented students, the State props up 6 million dong a year for every normal student. Meanwhile, every talented student, besides the sum of 6 million dong, also receives the investment worth 10 million dong a year.

It is estimated that in 2012-2015, the HCM City National University needs 97.7 billion dong more to run the program.

The initial goal of the program is to produce engineers and bachelors with high qualification to provide the successive teaching staff who would work at universities and junior colleges, and to provide more researchers to institutes.

However, it’s obvious that the goal has not been attained. The students graduating from the special training courses not only do not have necessary conditions to follow scientific research works, but also have to struggle to find jobs.

HN, a former student of the training program for talented, said that the decision to halt enrolling students is inevitable, when the graduates cannot be used for the expected purposes.

N said that she had to struggle to look for jobs, and she is now an officer of the public relation division of a company.

My said that talented students could learn in a good environment with better conditions than normal students. With the deep knowledge received at schools, they would be able to carry deep research works. However, most of them cannot take the jobs they want.

Dr Vu Thi Phuong Anh, a well-known educator, has also noted that the students of the program for the talents are nearly the same as normal students, saying that the program’s efficiency remains modest.
