It’s now the busiest time for university students, especially the ones who prepare for the graduation exams. However, even if they are so busy that they do not have time for lunches, they would have to arrange time to “visit lecturers and give them presents.”

Worrying oneself sick about presents for teachers
Minh, a third year student of a polytechnique school in Hanoi, complained that he would have to spend a lot of money in some more days.
“There are many items for you to spend money on, but you should not forget about the presents for teachers,” he said.
Some days ago, Minh and his classmates took the first semester exam. One day before the exam day, Minh and three other friends came to see the teacher and gave him “envelope with 400,000 dong inside.”
The envelope brought the desired effect. “A student dropped a spanner onto the ground, and he was heavily scolded by the teacher, who then gave him zero mark. Meanwhile, a friend of mine, who came to visit the teacher, did very badly at the practice exam, but he still passed,” Minh said.
“I can see with my eyes what the presents can bring. Therefore, I plan to give envelopes to all the lecturers, and I hope I would pass all the exams,” he continued, adding that he has been moving heaven and earth these days to borrow money from relatives.
Phuong, a fourth year student of a school in Cau Giay district, complained that he and his friends not only have to “give envelops to a teacher,” but also have to do many more errant things for him.
“When we were gathering at the school, we received a call from the teacher, who asked us to go to a general school to pick up his son. On the other day, the teacher called and invited us to come to have lunch. Of course, no one would be foolish enough to let the teacher pay for the lunch. We then had to invite the teacher to a restaurant and pay for the expensive meals,” he said.
Clever students are the ones who give big presents to teachers
The presents for teachers have different values, and the costs for “average mark” at the exams vary.
While Minh and his three other classmates only had to pay several hundreds of thousands of dong, others said they have to pay much more.
A female student from a mountainous province, who studied at a polytechnique school in Hanoi, never had to worry about how to look for a job after the graduation. Her father is the director of a big mining company, and it’s obvious that she would work as an accountant at the father’s company.
Therefore, the girl never spent much time on learning. However, she decided that she needs to obtain a high grade degree. And the only solution that helps her reach that goal was to “give thick envelopes” to the teachers.
Phuong has revealed that a friend of his had to spend 20 million dong to a teacher to be able to pass the exam.
Tien, a former student of a junior college in Hai Ba Trung district, repeatedly advised his younger brother, who is going to a school in Hanoi, to “visit the teachers regularly, and you would get the best.”
Some years ago, when he was a student of the junior college, he refused to give a gift to a teacher because he regretted the money. As a result, he failed the exam. “Money talks,” he said after relating his story.
