At the ongoing 32nd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-32) in Phnom Penh on Sept. 21, the Vietnamese NA delegation delivered important speeches to contribute to the draft AIPA-32 Resolution on consolidating the ASEAN Political-Security Community through the enhancement of cooperation and integration to ensure regional peace, stability and security.
At the session of the AIPA Committee on Economic Matters, the Vietnamese delegation actively discussed topics on promoting sustainable economic development towards narrowing the development gap inside ASEAN, as well as challenges and adaptation for economic development, and enhancing supervision to ensure effective implementation of economic agreements inside ASEAN and between ASEAN and its partners.
At the session of the AIPA Committee on Organizational Matters, the delegation put forward constructive proposals to effectively use human and material resources and raise the effectiveness of the AIPA Secretariat’s activities.
Vietnam supports enhancing the monitoring mechanism of the AIPA caucus to assist the fulfillment of regional goals, they said.
The Vietnamese delegation also voiced Vietnam’s support for the implementation of a project on enhancing the capacity of the AIPA general assembly.
They highlighted contributions made by Cambodian NA President Heng Samrin, AIPA President in the 2010-2011 term.
At the session of the AIPA Committee on Social Matters, delegates discussed the draft resolution on enhancing law enforcement to combat human trafficking.
AIPA-32 welcomed the joint declaration on promoting cooperation in combating trafficking in humans in Southeast Asia by ASEAN leaders and progress in the issue in ASEAN countries.
The participants called on ASEAN and AIPA member countries to soon ratify a Protocol on preventing, suppressing and punishing trafficking in persons, especially women and children, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crimes.
On the afternoon of the same day, the Vietnamese NA delegation and AIPA members attended dialogues with observers from Australia, Canada, China, the European Parliament, India and Russia.
They discussed topics relating to cooperation between ASEAN members and observer nations, agreement on the management of water resources for regional sustainable development and the necessity to have the international community’s commitment for an ASEAN free of land mines and unexploded ordnance.
