While many people were enjoying their holiday on May Day, several less fortunate residents in Thanh Hoa City continued to earn a living in the scorching sun.
Damp with sweet
With temperatures almost reaching 40 degree Celsius unskilled workers ironically continued to work on International Labour Day, May 1, in a bid to support their families in between crop periods.
Most of them came from the surrounding districts of Trieu Son, Dong Son, Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong.
They mainly worked as vendors, labourers, and scrap dealers.
Hai, a hired worker from Quang Xuong District was still working hard at a construction site along Truong Thi Street in Thanh Hoa City as the sun reached it’s height.
He said, “Unskilled labourers like us don’t have any holidays. Actually, we really want to have something to do to earn some money to support my family. Sometimes, we feel a bit self-pity seeing others enjoying their holidays. I love my children very much and hope our living standards will improve so we can support them even more.”
Le, another hired worker from Hoang Hoa District said, “We’re really not aware of what May Day’s about. We’re willing to work every days in order to earn a living.”
