The local media have to do more to protect Vietnam’s sea territory, says Duong Danh Dy, former general consul in Guǎngzhōu, China in 1993-1996.

The expert shared his viewpoints on protecting Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty over Truong Sa (Spratlys) and Hoang Sa (Paracels) archipelagos in a recent interview with Tuoi Tre.

How does China spread propaganda on its maritime ‘sovereignty’ over some disputed islands in the East Sea?

They spread the propaganda message on various kinds of media publications from newswires, print newspapers to magazines, from editorial articles to novels, documentaries and even films, from textbooks to journal magazines… They seem to have taken advantage of all “vehicles” in promoting it in the past 20 years.

It’s also easy to find many articles speaking ill of Vietnam in some major China’s state newspapers.

China has been promoting a false image about Vietnam to its all citizens, which makes part of the international community trust their false allegations over East Sea issues.

However, Vietnam’s communication channels are somewhat limited when it comes to preventing China from so doing because our social media are not very developed.

Recently, some Chinese scholars have voiced their criticisms about their government’s policies over disputed islands in the East Sea. What do you think about them?

They are admirable and have a good conscience.

What are your solutions?

In fact, local media circles have many things to do. We have to expose the dark sides of China in an appropriate way. All scientific works related to Vietnam’s national sovereignty over Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos should be translated in both English and Chinese in order to gain support from both the international community and the Chinese people.
