Grandmaster Le Quang Liem is competing at the simultaneous chess display in Ho Chi Minh City on December 28, 2010 Photo: Tuoi TreGrandmaster Le Quang Liem became unbeaten at a 90-minute simultaneous chess exhibition after he checkmated 19 and drew with the other during a meeting Tuesday to announce the open chess tournament, HDBank Cup.
Eight-year-old boy Nguyen Anh Khoi is the only player to tie with the 19-year-old Liem in Ho Chi Minh City.
The display was organized with 20 individual players sitting in front of 20 boards and the exhibitor Liem walks from board to board in a fixed order to make his moves.
As for the inauguration tournament, scheduled to start January 4-9, players will play a nine round format. It is expected to attract more than 80 chess players, including 35 from strong chess nations as India, Ukraine, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Vietnamese grandmasters Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, and Tu Hoang Thong will represent Vietnam to compete at the US$25,000 event.
Top three winners will earn cash prizes of $6,000 - $4,000 - $3,000 respectively.
