Eighty percent of Asian countries have supported Vietnam’s bid to host the 2019 Asian Games, Hoang Vinh Giang, General Secretary of the Vietnam Olympic Committee quoted the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) as saying.
In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is Vietnam’s major contender for the bid, but it seems to be left behind after it did not organise the regional sport event in 2011 (SEA Games) as well as expected, Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper reported.
Giang said the General Department of Sport and Physical Training is conducting a poll in 14 provinces and cities which, together with the capital city of Hanoi, would host competitions if Vietnam wins the race.
The department will summarise the poll results on May 25 and report to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for submission to the Government.
If the plan is finally given the green light, the Vietnam Olympic Committee will send its bidding dossier to the OCA in early June.
