15 movies for May showing at local cinemas

May will make a record for the highest number of new movies that will come to Vietnamese cinemas, including blockbusters like “Titanic 3D”, “The Artist”, “Midnight in Paris”, etc.

1. Mui Co Chay (Scent of Burned Grass)

Release date: May 4

The movie by director Nguyen Huu Muoi that won the Silver Lotus and the Golden Kite Awards will be screened at nation-wide cinemas in May.

The film is the story about four students, named Hoang, Thanh, Thang and Long in 1971. The four students decided to join the army. Their youth was buried by bombs and bullets in the Quang Tri battlefield, central Vietnam.

The four leading actors in the movie are brand new faces. The film was finished last year but until now it will be introduced at local cinemas, after going to many international film festivals.

2. The Three Stooges

Stars: Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso 

Storyline: Left on the doorstep of an orphanage run by nuns, newborns Moe, Larry and Curly grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Now their childhood home may have to close due to financial difficulties. But Larry, Curly and Moe, employed as the foster home's inept maintenance men, are determined to come to the rescue. Only The Three Stooges could become embroiled in an oddball murder plot - while stumbling into starring roles in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.

3. Conan the Barbarian 3D

4. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Storyline: A visionary sheik believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain's leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister's overzealous press secretary latches on to it as a 'good will' story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

5. The Artist

Storyline: Outside a movie premiere, enthusiastic fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling hero of the silent film, George Valentin. The star reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss on his cheek as they are surrounded by photographers. The headlines demand: "Who's That Girl?" and Peppy is inspired to audition for a dancing bit-part at the studio. However as Peppy slowly rises through the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin's world upside-down. 

6. Safe

7. Dark Shadows

Storyline: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better...

8. Titanic 3D

Release date: May 18

The super production of 15 years ago has returned with the 3D version. This is the most expected movie of Vietnamese audience this month.

The 3D version was released in mid-April and helped raise the total revenue of this film to $2 billion.

In Vietnam, this will be the first time Titanic to be screened at cinemas.

9. Bay Cap Ba

Release date: May 18

This is a Vietnamese horror movie about a group of high-school students who experience a nightmare during their tour to Da Lat city. Each of them is gradually killed by a mysterious killer. They are trapped by unexpected and dangerous methods.

10. Jump Street

Release date: May 18

Stars: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube 

Storyline: In high school, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was a dork and Jenko (Channing Tatum) was the popular jock. After graduation, both of them joined the police force and ended up as partners riding bicycles in the city park. Since they are young and look like high school students, they are assigned to an undercover unit to infiltrate a drug ring that is supplying high school students synthetic drugs.

11. Naked Soldier

Release date: May 18

Director: Marco Mak

Stars: Jennifer Tse, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo and Philip Ng 

Storyline: A gorgeous lethal killer, brainwashed by the villain, makes a startling discovery in a mission to eliminate a person she can in no way imagine.

12. Danh Cho Thang Sau (For June) 

Release date: May 25 

This is the first Vietnamese movies about basketball. The film is the story about three friends, two boys and a girl, in a high-school basketball team, their love story and their passion for basketball.

This is an independent film by young director Nguyen Huu Tuan.

13. Men in Black III 3D

Release date: May 25

Ten years after the second episode was released, Sony Pictures produced the third episode of Men in Black.

Stars: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin

Veteran Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to 1969 to before the murder and work with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save him, the Agency, the Earth and humanity itself.

14. The Cold Light of Day

Release date: May 25

Stars: Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver 

Storyline: After his family is kidnapped during their sailing trip in Spain, a young Wall Street trader is confronted by the people responsible: intelligence agents looking to recover a mysterious briefcase.

15. Midnight in Paris

Release date: May 25

Director: Woody Allen

Stars: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates 

Storyline: Gil and Inez travel to Paris as a tag-along vacation on her parents' business trip. Gil is a successful Hollywood writer but is struggling on his first novel. He falls in love with the city and thinks they should move there after they get married, but Inez does not share his romantic notions of the city or the idea that the 1920s was the golden age. When Inez goes off dancing with her friends, Gil takes a walk at midnight and discovers what could be the ultimate source of inspiration for writing. Gil's daily walks at midnight in Paris could take him closer to the heart of the city but further from the woman he's about to marry.
