Le Tran Nhat Tien from the northern province of Ha Tinh has been crowned winner at Doremi, the singing contest for children held annually by the national Vietnam Television Station.

At the final night of the competition which is in its 6th year on August 12, the 8-year-old boy impressed the jury as well as viewers with his confident performances of two songs “Trong Com” (Cylindrical Drum) and “Bay Cao Tieng Hat Uoc Mo” (The Voice of Dreams Flying High), then won the highest prize worth VND20 million (US$1,000).
The young boy and his family will receive a 7-day visit to the Hello Music Land Club in Australia. Last year’s winner Do Tri Dung also had chance to join 60 members of the club’s Children Orchestra to perform at a concert in December (add link).
Besides, Tien also won the audience prize with more than 14,000 votes for his performances.
The first and second runner-up titles of Do Re Mi 2012 went to 5-year-old girl Nguyen Pham Bao Tran who was the competition’s youngest contest, and 9-year-old Gia Linh from the southern province of Binh Duong respectively.
Earlier, a tearful performance of Tien at the round themed “Lullaby” caused a debate.
In the performance on July 22, Tien brought on stage the Vietnamese folk story that recounts how a little boy feels regret when he comes back home after a long time away knowing that his mother has passed away. Tien, playing the role of the son, with tears all over his face sang the song “Mother in The Dream” to express his painful emotions.
While many audiences and the jury said they were deeply touched, a number of viewers expressed doubt that the performance was a little exaggerated and just a play set up by the show’s organizers.
