Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, as Chair of ASEAN, has applauded Myanmar ’s General Elections held on Nov. 7.

In the statement issued on Nov. 8, Khiem said “ASEAN welcomes the General Elections held on Nov. 7 in Myanmar as a significant step forward in the implementation of the 7-point Roadmap for Democracy. ASEAN encourages Myanmar to continue to accelerate the process of national reconciliation and democratisation, for stability and development in the country.”
The ASEAN Chair also stressed the need for Myanmar to continue to work with ASEAN and the UN in this process and said that ASEAN stands ready to assist Myanmar if required and in accordance with the ASEAN Charter.
